Product Description

Application

Massive productions of surge arrester(MOA), either with porcelain or polymeric housing, are suitable in the systems of power generation, power transmission, power transformation.and power distribution under AC 220kV and below. They are mainly used to keep the amplitude of lighting impulse withstandvoltage and switching impulse withstand voltage to the prescribed level.

Operating Principle

Surge arrester is the most advanced over-voltage protector in the world.lts core element, metal oxide varistor(MOV).

Under the circumstance of normal operating voltage, the current through the surge arrester is just on microampere degree. When suffered from over-voltage, the surge arrester’s excellent non-linear characteristic will make the current through the surge arrester increase to several thousand amperes. And the surge arrester will be under the circulating state and release over-voltage energy so as to protecting the power transmission equipment againstthe damage caused by the over-voltage.

Product Advantages

  • Polymeric Surge Arresters offer a range of advantages that make them effective in protecting electrical systems from overvoltages:
  • Material Flexibility: Polymeric Surge Arresters utilize a silicone rubber housing that provides flexibility and can be molded into various shapes and sizes to fit different installation requirements.
  • Moisture Resistance: The polymeric housing is designed to repel water, reducing the risk of moisture-related degradation compared to porcelain housings that can be more susceptible to water ingress.
  • Lightweight: Compared to porcelain or metal housings, polymeric arresters are lighter, which can simplify installation and reduce structural support requirements.

Application Places

Polymeric Surge Arresters are widely used in various applications to protect electrical systems from transient overvoltages. Here are some common applications where these arresters play a crucial role:

  1. Power Distribution Networks: They are used to protect power distribution systems from voltage surges caused by lightning strikes and switching operations.
  2. Transmission Lines: Polymeric Surge Arresters are installed along high-voltage transmission lines to safeguard the system against overvoltages from various sources.
  3. Substations: They are used in substations to protect transformers, circuit breakers, and other critical equipment from damage due to voltage spikes.
  4. Industrial Plants: Factories and industrial facilities rely on these arresters to protect machinery and control systems from electrical disturbances.

  • 1.What is a polymeric surge arrester?

A polymeric surge arrester is a device used to protect electrical power systems from over-voltage transients caused by lightning or switching operations. It consists of a polymer housing that encloses metal-oxide varistors (MOVs) which absorb and dissipate the energy from the surges.

  • 2.How does a polymeric surge arrester work?

A polymeric surge arrester works by clamping over-voltage surges and diverting the excess energy to the ground. The metal-oxide varistors (MOVs) inside the arrester have a highly non-linear resistance, which drops sharply during a surge, thus limiting the voltage that reaches the protected equipment.

  • 3.What are the advantages of polymeric surge arresters over traditional porcelain arresters?

Polymeric surge arresters offer several advantages over traditional porcelain arresters, including:

    • Lightweight and easier handling
    • Higher resistance to pollution and environmental conditions
    • Shatter-resistant, which enhances safety
    • Better performance in terms of energy absorption and thermal stability
  • 4.Where are polymeric surge arresters commonly used?

Polymeric surge arresters are used in various applications, including:

    • Substations
    • Distribution networks
    • Transmission lines
    • Industrial power systems
    • Renewable energy installations such as wind and solar farms
  • 5.How should a polymeric surge arrester be maintained?

Polymeric surge arresters require minimal maintenance due to their robust design. However, periodic visual inspections for signs of physical damage, contamination, or weathering are recommended. It’s also advisable to check the electrical performance of the arrester periodically.

  • 6.What factors should be considered when selecting a polymeric surge arrester?

When selecting a polymeric surge arrester, consider the following factors:

    • Maximum continuous operating voltage (MCOV)
    • Rated voltage
    • Energy handling capability
    • Discharge current rating
    • Environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, humidity, pollution levels)
    • Application (e.g., substation, distribution network)
  • 7. Can polymeric surge arresters be installed outdoors?

Yes, polymeric surge arresters are designed for outdoor use and can withstand various environmental conditions, including UV radiation, temperature extremes, and pollution. They are often installed on poles, towers, and substations.

  • 8. What is the lifespan of a polymeric surge arrester?

The lifespan of a polymeric surge arrester depends on various factors such as the number and intensity of surges it encounters, environmental conditions, and the quality of the materials used in its construction. Typically, they can last 20 years or more with proper application and minimal maintenance.

  • 9. How do you test the performance of a polymeric surge arrester?

The performance of a polymeric surge arrester can be tested using various methods, including:

    • Insulation resistance tests
    • Leakage current measurements
    • Monitoring of temperature and physical condition
    • Surge discharge tests in a controlled environment
  • 10. Are polymeric surge arresters recyclable?

Yes, many components of polymeric surge arresters, such as the polymer housing and metal-oxide varistors, can be recycled. Proper disposal and recycling practices should be followed to ensure environmental sustainability.
