A disconnect switch establishes an isolation point between energized and de-energized parts of an electrical system. It gives operators a defined switching position for inspection, maintenance, equipment replacement and system reconfiguration. Depending on its design, it may be suitable only for off-load isolation or may also carry a specified load-switching duty.
A request for a “lightning arrester” can describe several different products: a pole-mounted metal-oxide arrester, a transformer-terminal arrester, a line surge arrester, a station-class unit, or even a low-voltage surge protective device. Quoting from the term alone risks placing the project in the wrong product category.
A transformer rating and a requested fuse ampere value do not form a complete fuse-link specification. The same transformer can require a different link characteristic when feeder fault levels, loading policy, upstream recloser settings, secondary protection, or cutout hardware changes.
A request for “grounding clamps” is not enough for a utility or substation quotation. The supplier still needs to know what is being connected, the material and dimensions of both members, whether the joint is removable or permanent, the available installation method, and the environment in which the connection must remain serviceable.
A substation single-line diagram may show a switching point beside a transformer, bus section, cable feeder, or replaceable item of equipment.
A procurement-focused guide to mapping the components, defining the project inputs and preparing an RFQ that a utility-pole hardware supplier can review.
An insulation piercing connector must match two cables, not just one. A request for an IPC for a 95 mm² LV aerial bundled cable is incomplete if it does not identify the branch conductor, conductor materials, insulation, connection type and installation requirements.
Choosing the right surge arrester for an overhead distribution line is one of the most important protection decisions in a medium voltage network. A well selected arrester can limit lightning and switching overvoltage, protect transformers and switchgear, and reduce outage risk.
